What Is the St. Louis Arborist Association?

Founded in 1955 by Ken Kirk, Ed Schrader, and John Haberthier, the St. Louis Arborist Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the skills, knowledge, and integrity of tree care professionals in the St. Louis area. The goal is to establish a culture of cooperation and high standards of care so we can preserve the health and longevity of our trees and improve the quality, beauty, and value of our St. Louis landscapes.

What is a Certified Arborist?

Arborists are skilled tree care professionals trained in the art and science of planting, assessing, and maintaining the health and safety of trees. An arborist should be certified through one or more professional organizations. Certification provides a measurable assessment of an individual’s knowledge and competence regarding proper tree care.

The basic accreditation for St. Louis Arborist Association professionals is certification through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). To be an ISA Certified Arborist, one must pass a comprehensive examination verifying they have knowledge in tree biology, safety, maintenance, planting, trimming and pruning, diagnosis, and other arboricultural standards.

To maintain certification, a certified arborist must continue their education and stay up-to-date on the latest scientific and technical advances in arboriculture. All arborists who are certified by the ISA must adhere to the Society's Code of Ethics
